| . | Checking For Errors On Your ComputerYou are probably not aware of all the work your computed does, in particular the hard drive. For starters there is the obvious one, when you save a file it has to find room for it, register it's location, and be sure it can find all the parts later. It does not usually save a file all in one place, but broken up in small pieces to utilise the available space best. And when it loads up that file again it it has to be able to find every piece and re-assemble the pieces in the correct order without missing anything. If instead of just saving a simple file you are installing a new program that is even worse. It is a major job saving it, associating it to various libraries already on your computer, often making certain files re-set to run on the new program, and sometimes even changing existing files. Then of course there is the adding of new hardware. If you were using computers in the 1980s 0r early 90s you probably remember what a palaver it was getting new hardware set up to work with your computer. Nowadays it is easy because your computer does all that hard work for you. But this does mean a hell of a lot of work for your computer to do, and your hard drive usually gets a hell of a workout in the process. And even if you don't do any of this on a regular basis, just using your computer gives the hard drive a hell of a workout. Watch the hard drive activity next time you shut down, see how much it buzzes. But with all this work your hard drive is the most important part of the machine. Sure, the CPU does all the clever work, but it needs the data on your hard drive. Take out the CPU and replace it with a brand new one and you will probably not know the difference. But take out your hard drive and replace it with a brand new one, and nothing happens - your computer will just sit there like an expensive, but useless, desk ornament. Yet most people take the hard drive for granted. They just assume it will go on working. But all it takes is one misplaced piece of data and things go wrong. Several errors and your computer dies altogether, and the only way to fix things may be to reformat the drive and loose everything that you have stored on it. That is why it is important to keep an eye on things and scan for errors regularly. If something goes wrong you have to know in advance so that you can fix it before it is too late. So remember to scan your computer for errors on a regular basis. | . |
